BMW X5 and X6 recalled due to leaking power steering fluid
BMW of North America is recalling about 2,642 of its X5 and X6 sport-utility vehicles says the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Certain models of 2012 BMW X5 SUVs equipped with a diesel engine and 2013 X5 and X6 SUVs may leak power steering fluid. If the flammable liquid sprays onto hot engine exhaust parts, an engine compartment fire may occur.
According to NHTSA, the leaking power steering fluid is a result of a “machining error” in the steering gear surface during the production of the BMW X5 and BMW X6 “activity vehicles.”
In July, BMW will begin to notify owners affected by this safety recall of BMW X5 and X6 SUVs. Mechanics at BMW dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the flawed steering gear for free.
